What are the requirements for installing a SSL certificate?

The only requirement is that your web site is hosted on it's own IP address. SSL certificated require that each domain name resolves to it's own IP and vice-versa. Since the shared IP addresses do not resolve to any websites, but simply the server as a whole, SSL certificates cannot be installed on it.
